Blind As A… Chicken?

Holly has told me that chickens can’t see in the dark but I’ve never really experienced their night blindness first hand.  It’s something that I’ve always wanted to see and last night I got to experience the humor that accompanies a chicken that has been caught out in the dark.

Since Holly had to work an evening shift last night, I was responsible for gathering the hens at dusk and putting them in their coop.  Normally they will just go in by themselves but Holly recently moved the chicks out there so the bigger birds aren’t able to get into the coop on their own.  I guess that’s their punishment for pecking at, and generally being big jerks to the chicks.

More Construction

As the weather has warmed, Holly and I have opted to immerse ourselves in yet another construction project.  Since our garage has been taken over by yard care equipment, we really need a shed.  This is a perfect opportunity to use the skills that I learned while building the basement.

I’ve always been impressed with the look of shed kits but I’ve never really heard anything good about them.  It seems like they always have some flaw, usually associated with the floor joists being too small to accomodate the weight that they are asked to support. Becasue of this fact, Holly and I opted to draw up plans on our own and make the shed how we wanted.  Another factor in this decision is that we wanted to put it under the deck.  Because of the odd shape and height restrictions, a kit probably wouldn’t work very well for us.

We Have Chickens!!

Well, I found out that it will still be a couple of weeks before our chicks will come so I have become a little impatient. I saw some pullets that are 24 weeks old for sale on KSL. They are old enough to be laying eggs right now so I thought that would be good since my chicks won’t start laying until Fall. I drove down to Sandy and picked up two of them and brought them home in the dog crate. The kids were so excited to go get them. They were a little hesitant to come out of the crate but once they were in the chicken coop they were right at home. They escaped a couple of times and the kids and I had quite the time running around the yard trying to catch them and get them put up into the roost for bed, but we finally got them. They said “This is so fun chasing chickens!” I hope they still think that after we have to chase them everyday.

Our Progress

In addition to the yard work last weekend, I also managed to stain the deck. It is no wonder that Hannah ended up with a haircut from Alex on Saturday. Jeremiah and I were outside all day on Friday and Saturday. You can see pictures of Alex’s handiwork here.

Also, my seedlings are coming up quite nicely. Now if only the weather can warm up again and stay that way so that I can plant them.

Alex The Barber

Jeremiah and I worked out in the yard on Saturday cutting up sod and getting the garden ready. Alex and Hannah got tired of playing outside so they went inside and decided to play “barber”. Alex didn’t want his haircut but Hannah did. She said that she wanted her hair to look like her Aunt Chelsea’s. So Hannah came outside modeling her new hairdo. She was quite excited that Alex had cut her hair.

Jeremiah was not happy about that at all. Meanwhile Chelsea got to our house and was returning Emma from her sleepover and offered to take Hannah to Nick’s sister’s house so that her hair could be fixed. This is the after picture.

I guess her hair could look worse. Jeremiah is not happy about it and I am just relieved that it is just hair. It will grow back.

I am getting ready for Spring planting. I picked up this planting tray at WalMart for $6. I planted:

  • Black Eyed Susans which will go along my back fence
  • Shasta Daisies which will also go along my back fence
  • Carrots in my garden
  • Sunflowers which will grow in the corner of my yard
  • Peas,Watermelon, Sweet Corn, Zucchini and Tomatoes all in my garden.

I will post a picture when they start to sprout. Somewhere between March 25th and April 1st.

A New Blog

For those who are interested, Holly has gone rogue and decided to start a blog of her own detailing all of the fun things that we are doing in the yard.  Actually, they’re fun for her but when they’re all finished, my back screams lots of bad words at me for participating but I take great pride in a job well done so it’s worth it.

You can check out her blog here.  For those of you who are interested in what she has to say but clicking that mouse one more time is just too much to ask, don’t worry, I’ll try and steal her posts from this new rogue blog and post them here.
