As Seen On TV

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while but thanks to an extremely busy schedule full of 16 hour days, I’ve been putting it off.  A few weeks ago though I made a purchase that has since renewed my desire to share my thoughts with you on some of the products that we see being sold on television.  When people see an infomercial, a lot of times they think that the product being sold is too good to be true.  Thankfully, we have this little thing called the internet where you can actually research a product and find out if it’s a steaming pile or if it’s actually worth spending money on.

My job allows for me to see all sorts of technology before other people.  It also allows for me to watch television shows and movies on one monitor while I do work on another.  This is very convenient because I am able to stay current on a lot of the shows that I enjoy watching.  I also get to watch a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t otherwise have the time to.  No, I don’t just watch TV all day.  I do get to see an episode here or there though.

One of the shows that I was introduced to by my coworkers is a British comedy called The IT Crowd.  This is a true comedic gem.  It’s about two computer geeks and their female, know-nothing-about-IT boss who work in an  IT department.  They are typical basement dwellers who only come out to fix the things that technically challenged people shouldn’t be using anyway.  They just finished up the third season in the UK and there have been talks of bringing it to the US a la The Office.  (I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this actually happening but it’s probably doubtful that it will.)

Death And Taxes

I’ve posted enough about death on this site over the past few months.  There’s no need for me to post more about the subject now.  It is tax time though and, as the saying goes, “something something death and taxes”.

Holly and I will usually get a good tax return.  I found out earlier this week that this year will be no different.  We had originally planned on taking the kids to Disneyland and buying a 52″ LCD television for the basement.  Given the current economic situation, we have decided to be a bit more responsible and pay bills.  We’re also going to buy some food storage and a few other “responsible” items but it’s not going to be all fun and games like we had originally planned.  I’m a bit bummed that I’m going to have to wait for my new TV but I’ll deal with it.  I’d much rather be able to defend myself with a full tummy during the inevitable robot uprising than watch 24 in high-definition.  (If I keep telling myself that, I might eventually believe it.)

Let’s Be Social

This is a post that I’ve been wanting to write for quite a while but have not been sufficiently motivated to do so.  Now I have a video clip to accompany my words so I’m glad that I waited.  Videos make everything so much better.

Everyone is familiar with MySpace.  I don’t like it.  With all of the half naked ugly chicks, angsty pre-teens, and frat boys, it’s bad enough.  When you add poorly designed pages that should come with seizure warnings into the mix, it becomes completly unbearable.  However, millions of users would probably disagree with me.  For years, it was the leader in social networking sites but that doesn’t change the fact that it makes my eyes want to bleed.

About a year ago, my sister Chelsea, started bugging me and Holly about setting up profiles on Facebook.  After Holly finally capitulated, I decided that I better give in as well.  (I feel shame over caving to peer pressure.)

The Straps Aren’t Decorative

Ever since Christmas, there has been a lot of playing games on our new Wii.  The kids can’t seem to get enough which makes me pretty happy.  (I’m glad that they are enjoying their present.)

For those who are unfamiliar with how the Wii controllers work, they are basically motion sensitive remote controls.  For all of those who used to play Super Mario Bros. on the original NES and were mocked for all of the controller movement that you felt was necessary to make Mario jump, the Wii is for you.  I’ll often forget about the motion sensitivity when playing Mario Kart with the kids and end up getting off to a slow start but that’s besides the point.

Having Two Remotes Is Fun

Some of you may remember a few months back when I posted my thoughts on Logitech’s Harmony One universal remote.  I love this remote.  It has got to be one of the best gadgets in my house.  Anyways, I discovered a new use for it: teasing my kids.

Sunday night, Emma and Alex were watching television.  I was standing behind the sofa with my Harmony One while Emma was trying to surf channels using the television’s remote.  She would change the channel and I would mute the television.  She’d then un-mute it and I’d change the channel.  After a few minutes of this Emma became extremely frustrated and actually got up to change the channel.  I muted the TV again.  She was so angry that she shut the television off and told Alex that they couldn’t watch TV because it was broken.  At this point, I couldn’t contain myself any longer and began laughing.  I told Emma that the TV was fine and that I was the one causing the problems.  She responded by hiding my remote when I wasn’t looking.  Lucky for me, I was able to find it relatively easily.

I Love The Olympics

I’ve pretty much been glued to the television at night watching the Olympics.  It’s funny how every four years, I all of a sudden care about sports that I normally have no interest in like women’s gymnastics.  Maybe it’s due to the fact that I love my country and love to see its athletes dominate the rest of the world.

I’m currently working on another post that I hope to have up soon.  In the meantime, here is Dwight from The Office with some suggestions for future Olympic events.
