I Think I’m An Angry White Man

My mom sent me a link to an article from The Aspen Times. As I read it, I discovered that it almost perfectly describes me. In fact, it was so good that I thought that I’d post it here.

There is a great amount of interest in this year’s presidential elections, as everybody seems to recognize that our next president has to be a lot better than George Bush. The Democrats are riding high with two groundbreaking candidates — a woman and an African-American — while the conservative Republicans are in a quandary about their party’s nod to a quasi-liberal maverick, John McCain.

Each candidate is carefully pandering to a smorgasbord of special-interest groups, ranging from gay, lesbian and transgender people to children of illegal immigrants to working mothers to evangelical Christians.

Got Change?

Recently I began noticing commercials that I don’t remember ever seeing in Utah. They are trying to sway my vote in the upcoming Democratic presidential primary election next week. Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are telling me that if I vote for them, they are going to change things in Washington. Republicans like John McCain are also saying that they’ll bring change.

Change can be good. It can also be bad though.  If I go from being a free man to wearing a prison jumpsuit, that’s a change.  It’s not a good change though.  I never thought I’d say this, but I agree with both Hillary and Obama; things in Washington need to change. However, the changes that they are proposing, in my opinion, aren’t necessarily good. People are assuming that if major changes happen in this election cycle, those changes are going to be for the best. I strongly disagree.

No Smoking

Last night I was watching the news and a story came on about a state senator who would like to make it against the law for an adult to smoke in a car if children are present. You can watch the story here.

In theory, I agree with the reasoning behind the law that is being proposed. There are millions of smokers in this world and many of them have kids. Those kids are forced to inhale second-hand smoke which has been proven to be very unhealthy. I get that. I have no problem with somebody saying “don’t smoke around your kids.” I think that my problem is that I don’t know if it’s the job of the government to do this.

So Many Thoughts…

I have a lot of things running through my mind right now that I’d like to share. Since school started last night, I’ll start with that.

This semester will be my last before I can graduate with an Associates degree. After that, I’ll only have a handful of classes left before I get a Bachelors degree. It’s nice to see the end of the very, very long tunnel that I’ve been cruising through. The ten year plan is getting old. It’ll be nice to finally finish.
Now for some of my thoughts about stories that have been in the headlines over the last few days…

The Golden Globes award show has been canceled due to the writers strike. While I’m very upset about not being able to watch 24 or new episodes of The Office, I have to say thank you to the writers for this one. I get so tired of celebrities and their own sense of self-importance. They have award shows to congratulate themselves on achievements that nobody but their own care about. Unless there’s a hobbit or a wookiee getting awards, I really don’t care.

Got Matches?

For those who know me, you know that I enjoy politics. Nay. Not enjoy. Love. I listen to talk raido every chance I get. I check out websites and try to learn as much as possible from every point of view. I do this because I feel that it is my duty as an American to take part in the political process, even if it is by doing something as simple as casting an educated vote on election day.

That being said, I’m angry and feel like my country is being destroyed. Not from terrorists or other external forces but from within the walls of our nation’s capital. The immigration bill that has been in the news lately, officially called the The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, unofficially called the Amnesty Bill, is causing a sense of amazement that I have never felt when watching the political process from afar. It’s not a good amazement either.

Global Warming: Fact or Crap?

How’s that for an opening volley? I feel like being controversial today so here’s my thoughts on global warming.

Let me start by saying that I like the outdoors. I enjoy camping and fishing and riding my bike. I dislike being able to see the air that I breathe and don’t particularly enjoy drinking dirty water.

In my Tree Hugging 101 class, we recently watched Al Gore’s award winning film on global warming called An Inconvenient Truth. I strongly disagree with Mr. Gore’s politics but I still sat in the class doing my best to have an open mind. While I agree with certain points that he illustrates, like that the Earth’s climate is changing, I think that there is also a lot of pseudo-science and just plain crap in the movie.
