Ever since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed comic books. In between the times that I’d get to find out what happened in the newest issue of GI Joe, Batman, or Superman, I’d supplement my love for comics by reading the Sunday comics. I would even choose which newspaper to get based solely on which comics they printed.
Now that I’m older and have children of my own, I still enjoy reading the Sunday comics. I’m also proud to say that Emma has found the joy that a few well written panels can bring. When Holly goes through the paper on Sundays, she has started setting the comics aside for Emma to read. I really enjoy seeing Emma read comics. I’ve taught her well.

…and I couldn’t care less. I have never understood the fascination that people have with turning the page on a calendar. Well, I can understand it if they have a really cool calendar like Dilbert or The Art of Star Wars. Still though, even the presence of a cool calendar doesn’t excuse the “festivities” that take place with the coming of a new year. Standing outside in the cold and counting backwards from ten just doesn’t appeal to me.
The only year that I have looked forward to is 2000 and that was because I wanted to see if the predicted horrors of Y2K would actually happen. Obviously they didn’t which was a great disappointment to many survivalists that had stocked up on toilet paper and Mountain Dew but it was nice to know that my VCR still flashed “12:00″ without missing a beat.

I’m a huge fan of Airborne. They are Alka-Seltzer like tablets that you drop into water and then drink the resulting cloudy, bubbly water that results. They are great for when you feel like you are getting sick. We go through a lot of them in our house.
I wasn’t going to post anything else today but came across this blog by Dilbert author, Scott Adams. In it, he recounts his experience chewing what I assume to be an Airborne tablet. He apparently was only able to down about half of it before it beat him. That’s weak.
My first experience with Airborne was also waterless. I chewed it and, to my great surprise, started foaming purple foam from my mouth. My tongue also felt extremely tingly for about an hour but I ate the whole thing without complaint or death. It was rather cool actually and made me quite popular at work for the five minutes that I was foaming.

Today is my birthday. I say that not in an attempt to get birthday wishes, I say it to get presents. Lots of big, expensive presents. Actually, I just wanted to share some random thoughts about some of the things that I’m noticing about myself as I get older.
First off, my hair is starting to go gray. Honestly, that’s really no big deal to me. I’ve had gray hairs in my beard for a few years now. The fact that it’s now showing up on my head is really of no concern.
Speaking of hair, I’ve started growing it in strange places. A few months ago, I was scratching my back and felt a long hair on it. I assumed that it was one of Holly’s that had been affixed to the inside of my shirt through the magic of static cling. I was wrong. It was attached to the middle of my back through the magic of hair growth. I pulled it out and discovered, to great surprise, that it was about four inches long and white. That’s not right.

I have worked for a lot of companies doing technical support. When I read my Dilbert calendar yesterday, I realized how good I have it where I’m at.

This comic is funny because it’s true. I have worked for companies, MSN and Gateway come to mind, where this is the prevalent attitude. Places like that are really not very fun to work at.
I have never understood the purpose of having technical support available to customers where the main function was to tell them to call somebody else. It makes the caller mad and reflects poorly on the company. Fortunately, I can fix pretty much anything now. I like that.

This morning as I was changing the page on my Dilbert calendar, I came to the realization of just how similar my life is to Dilbert’s with respect to my job. Don’t get me wrong, I like what I do and I’m good at it. I may be looking for a new place of employment but it’s not because I hate my job.
Anyways… As I was reading Dilbert, I couldn’t help but think of some of the employees that have come through Unisys as of late. I’m not going to call anybody out here but these comic strips pretty much explain it all.
