Year-End Wrap Up

I was talking with a friend at church the other day and he likened the Christmas season to a car accident.  Despite how much preparation goes into getting ready for everything, it still manages to sneak up and leave everyone wondering what it was that just hit.  Given how the past month has gone, I felt that this was a very appropriate analogy.  Now that things have started to settle down, I decided that I finally better sit down and try and recap our activities over the past few weeks.

Goodbye, Grandpa

Regular visitors to our blog know that my grandfather passed away last week.  It is still very fresh in my mind, and I’m still very emotional,  so I can’t say much, but I will try and touch on a few of the events of the past few days.

We went to Idaho Thursday afternoon so that I could attend the viewing that evening.  Holly stayed at the hotel with the kids so that they could swim.  As I was leaving for the viewing, I ran into my dad and Emmy so I helped them get settled in their room.  As I was attempting to leave again, I ran into Santa Claus.  (The Marriott employees were having their Christmas party and he was in attendance.)  I asked him if he could say hi to the kids in the pool which he was more than happy to do.  (Remember, he’s Santa so he loves kids.)  By this time, I had been trying to bring myself to leave for about 30 minutes.  It started to become obvious that I was looking for any reason to delay my going to the viewing.

In Loving Memory…

grandpaDaniel R. Zohner, loving husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Paul on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, of heart failure.

He was born July 10, 1923, in Cedron, to Jacob and Polly Christina Miller Zohner, the third son of 11 children. He graduated from Teton High School and then attended Utah State Agricultural College. Dan served in the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper in 11th Airborne in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return, he completed his bachelor’s degree at Utah State.

He married Fern Zollinger on Aug. 4, 1948, in the Logan LDS Temple and they were blessed with four children, Lynn Zohner (Emmy), Annette Warburton (Paul), Sheri Walters (Randy) and Kris Katoa (Amaile).

Remember Halloween?

If you were to walk into any store these days, you would probably think that the next holiday to be celebrated was Christmas.  Contrary to retailer belief though, we actually have two holidays, including one pretty major one, between now and Christmas.

In just a few short weeks, we will celebrate the end of the harvest by stuffing our faces.  This holiday is know as Hallowe’en or, if you’re not into traditional spellings, Halloween.  Ironically, we will not be partaking of the fruits of said harvest but will be gorging ourselves on sugary confections originating in Hershey, Pennsylvania and McLean, Virginia (home of M&M’s).

On Saturday, our ward held their annual trunk or treat. This is a safe environment where neighborhood kids can run around a parking lot and get candy from people sitting in and around their vehicles.  Normally, I try to encourage my kids to not take candy from people that are sitting in their car but for this, I made an exception.  We have about 4.3 million kids living within our ward boundaries so, as you can probably imagine, there were a lot of kids running around in costumes.

My Weekend at Womens Conference

I left for Provo on Wednesday. I drove down with my neighbor Rebecca. We stopped in Salt Lake at a store called NPS but she calls Market Square. It is a huge warehouse that has a grocery section, a furniture section, a clothing section of things that are pulled from stores because they have been late on shipments or they have dented packaging on the sell by date is coming up. The prices are ridiculously low. I also brought my coupons and several things were free because of the coupon. We bought more than enough food for us to eat down at Women’s Conference and I only spent $11 and that included three lipsticks that I bought. It was fun to see how much money we could save.

Last Sunday

I gave a talk last Sunday. They asked me to speak in church on the topic of Family Home Evening. Jeremiah didn’t have to speak, just me. In our ward, they don’t have couples speak because most of the families in our ward have one or more kids and so they just ask individuals to speak so the spouse can sit with the children. That is what Jeremiah did while I gave my talk. It went pretty well. I was actually pretty excited to give it because I was able to give an introduction and let everyone in our new ward learn a little about us. I am going to the ward choir and my neighbor also told me about a community choir that the city does and that is on Saturday mornings. I went to that practice this morning and I really enjoyed it. I am going with those same neighbors to women’s conference down at BYU and participating in the choir for that. I am very excited to go.
