Clean And Organized

When we found out that I would be getting laid off from Centercode, Holly was actually somewhat excited because it meant that I would have time to get things done around the house.  In addition to finishing organizing the garage and shed, Holly had plans for painting and organizing Alex’s bedroom and getting all of the baby stuff set up in there.

I decided to start with the garage since it had been on my list of stuff to do for the longest amount of time.  I knew that it was in bad shape but I had no idea that it would take me a week to get looking how I envisioned.  I started by moving everything in the garage that belonged in the shed out.  This meant that in addition to organizing the garage, I had to also organize the mostly empty shed.  This wasn’t too big of a deal but it did take some time.

More Construction

As the weather has warmed, Holly and I have opted to immerse ourselves in yet another construction project.  Since our garage has been taken over by yard care equipment, we really need a shed.  This is a perfect opportunity to use the skills that I learned while building the basement.

I’ve always been impressed with the look of shed kits but I’ve never really heard anything good about them.  It seems like they always have some flaw, usually associated with the floor joists being too small to accomodate the weight that they are asked to support. Becasue of this fact, Holly and I opted to draw up plans on our own and make the shed how we wanted.  Another factor in this decision is that we wanted to put it under the deck.  Because of the odd shape and height restrictions, a kit probably wouldn’t work very well for us.

The Beginning Of My “Farm”

On Friday I got a weather vane for the garden and I also got my chicken coop. I will begin planting my peas and cabbage and a few other things next week, if the weather is good. Hopefully my baby chicks will be in next week also. I am getting so excited for them!

Our Progress

In addition to the yard work last weekend, I also managed to stain the deck. It is no wonder that Hannah ended up with a haircut from Alex on Saturday. Jeremiah and I were outside all day on Friday and Saturday. You can see pictures of Alex’s handiwork here.

Also, my seedlings are coming up quite nicely. Now if only the weather can warm up again and stay that way so that I can plant them.

Groundbreaking

Last Friday and Saturday we worked in the yard. We rented a sod cutter and relocated the sod from the backyard to the side of the house and made a strawberry patch. We also boxed in the garden area and brought in a whole truckload of mulch for the garden and flower beds. I am so excited for my garden now. I will be planting my lettuce, carrots and peas soon.

Our Yard

img_0004We have some plans for our backyard.  We are going to rent a sod cutter and make a garden area. You can see the area that we have outlined in black spray paint.

Then we are also going to put in a patio at the end of the deck stairs. I am growing flowers from seed that I plan to put in along the back fence. We are also going to build a shed that will go under the deck. I am so excited for all of the plans for our yard. I will post more pictures as our work progresses.

I Miss My Dishwasher

For the majority of the time that Holly and I have been married, we’ve enjoyed the luxury of owning a dishwasher.  I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t like having a machine that washed my dirty dishes.  I think that I’ve become spoiled by technology over the years.

When we first moved into our house two-and-a-half years ago, we had a dishwasher that worked.  Once.  It passed the home inspection and then it never worked again though so we decided to upgrade.  The one that came with the house was a very small, very cheap unit.  We replaced it with a nice big Maytag that we assumed would serve us well for years to come.  After all, Maytags never need to be repaired.  That’s why Dan the Maytag Man never does anything but sit and read the newspaper.

Taking Back The Garage

Now that the basement is almost completely finished, I decided that the weekend would be spent trying to clean the garage enough to allow one of our vehicles to be parked inside.  I have always taken great pride in the fact that, unlike some of our neighbors, we could actually park both vehicles in the garage and still have room to walk around them.  When we decided to start working on the basement though, all that changed.  I still took pride in being able to park in the garage, I just couldn’t.  It’s amazing how much room sheetrock, lumber, bathroom stuff, etc. takes up.

What A Week…

I know that it’s been a while since I posted anything.  I actually have good reasons for not doing so.  Last week was complete chaos in the Zohner home.  Let me try and catch everyone up.

Last Friday, my sister Chelsea got married.  Because of this, my mom came into town from Denver.  The last time she was here, she made a comment about how the basement looked just as it had months earlier when she last saw it.  I wasn’t about to let that happen again so I spent 35 hours over the weekend painting and installing the home theater speakers.  I started on Friday afternoon and finally finished Sunday evening.  Lucky for me, Chelsea and Nick came over and helped a bit which actually ended up helping a lot because without them, I wouldn’t have been ready on Monday when we had the flooring installed.  Now I just have a few things left and then the basement will be complete.  YAY!
