A Few Less Teeth

Last week I had the pleasure of taking the kids to the dentist.  This was a first for me since Holly usually takes them but we were able to get through things without any problems.

Emma and Hannah both had no cavities but the dentist found a “small one” on one of Alex’s teeth.  I figured that we’d have to bring him back but the dentist just took him into a back room, had him open his mouth, and proceeded to drill out the cavity.  The entire process took about three minutes.  They didn’t even numb Alex’s mouth!  I couldn’t believe what I had seen.  Alex was in no pain and he was once again cavity free.

12 Weeks

Baby Zohner at 12 WeeksHolly had her three month checkup today.  Her doctor is a big fan of ultrasounds to monitor the health and development of the baby so, like usual, Holly came home with a new picture.  Both Holly and the baby are doing well.  The baby is still due to arrive in mid-January and we’re still hoping that it comes a few weeks early.  December 30th works well for me.

We deiceded to tell the kids about the new arrival over the weekend.  They seem to be excited, and seeing picutres of their unborn sibling only adds to that excitement. Hannah was so excited to show me the picture that instead of saying something like “It’s what’s in Mommy’s tummy.” she said “It’s what’s in the baby’s tummy.”  I’m not sure if she doesn’t understand what the photo is or if her excitement just impaired her ability to convey what she was thinking.  Either way, it was pretty funny.

Hannah’s New Shoes

Asphalt PieI know I’m late in posting this but a few weeks ago Hannah turned four years old.  For her birthday we went to Winger’s for lunch and then went and saw Pixar’s Up.  (Up was an amazing movie that I would recommend to anybody.)  As soon as we walked into Winger’s, Hannah told the hostess that it was her birthday.  This worked to her advantage since she got a free asphalt pie after the meal.  As you can see, she enjoyed wearing it almost as much as she enjoyed eating it.

Hannah received some pretty cool birthday presents.  Chelsea gave her some clothes and shoes but the clothes were too big and the shoes were too small so Holly had to exchange them.  Yesterday she had some time so she took Hannah to the store and let her choose the clothes and shoes that she wanted.  Hannah found some pink glitter covered  shoes with Disney princesses on the inside so she had to have them.  My response to Holly when Hannah showed them to me was “Really?  You really let her get these?  Really?”

Bedtime Stories

are-you-my-motherIf you have children, then you know that bedtime can often be the most challenging time of the day.  At our house, after years of trying to figure out what works, we’ve finally gotten into some sort of routine.  It doesn’t always work, but it works enough of the time that we keep doing it.

Emma is wonderful about going to bed.  We’ll tuck her in and then she’ll read until she’s ready to sleep.  Her body seems to know how much sleep it needs because we never have problems waking her up in the morning.  In fact, most of the time she will wake herself up.

Alex The Barber

Jeremiah and I worked out in the yard on Saturday cutting up sod and getting the garden ready. Alex and Hannah got tired of playing outside so they went inside and decided to play “barber”. Alex didn’t want his haircut but Hannah did. She said that she wanted her hair to look like her Aunt Chelsea’s. So Hannah came outside modeling her new hairdo. She was quite excited that Alex had cut her hair.

Jeremiah was not happy about that at all. Meanwhile Chelsea got to our house and was returning Emma from her sleepover and offered to take Hannah to Nick’s sister’s house so that her hair could be fixed. This is the after picture.

I guess her hair could look worse. Jeremiah is not happy about it and I am just relieved that it is just hair. It will grow back.

I’m Too Old

When I was a kid, I would spend countless hours at the roller skating rink with my friends.  I don’t think that it was so much that I enjoyed roller skating as it was something to do.  Don’t get me wrong, I had fun, I just don’t think that the fun was due to the fact that I was wearing ugly shoes with wheels.

A few weeks ago, Holly and the kids thought that it would be a good idea to go roller skating.  Skating rinks have evolved since my youth into an entertainment utopia.  In addition to roller skating, the one by us has a large number of arcade games, a place to get food, including pizza, a rock climbing wall, and a wing of bounce houses.

The Poncho

I decided I wanted to do a project and saw that on WikiHow was a very easy kids poncho that I could crochet.  Instructions can be found here.

I started on Friday night and finished on Saturday. It was very easy. I made the first one for Hannah and I will begin Emma’s tonight. Hannah was so excited to wear hers today at church. Alex even said that he wanted me to make him one, but I think I will have to think of something else to make for him instead.

The New Babysitter

Ever since Holly decided to go to nursing school, we’ve had more than our fair share of babysitters watch the kids during the day.  Now that she’s finished and only works a couple of days a week, we still have a need for somebody to watch our kids.  This is a decision that we take very seriously.

A few weeks ago, the lady who was watching the kids informed Holly that she needed to spend more time volunteering at her kids’ school.  I can’t fault her for that but I wasn’t happy with the fact that she would no longer be watching Alex and Hannah.  The kids loved going over there and she was good with them.  Plus, she lives just down the street so, on nice days, we could actually walk the kids to or from her house.

Why I Don’t Like Gum

I’ve never been a big fan of chewing gum.  I’ve always seen it as a product with a low return on investment.  I can usually chew a piece for five or ten minutes before it loses enough flavor that I feel like I’m chewing on a piece of rubber.  I may as well just dip a bouncy ball in some sugar and suck on that for a while.

Now that I have children, I am even less  a fan of gum.  They like to chew it, then take it out of their mouth to play with.  It inevitably ends up in the carpet, stuck in some bedding, or even worse, stuck in their hair.  This is exactly what happened yesterday.

A Tale Of Two Rooms

For the past few years, Alex and Emma were sharing a room.  We thought that putting Alex in with Emma was the best option since, at the time, both he and Hannah had a hard time going to sleep at bedtime.  There was way too much playing and jumping on beds and it just wasn’t worth the nightly battles.

The problem with the sharing of the room though is that both kids were very messy.  It was rare that the carpet could be seen thanks to all of the toys, laundry, etc. on the floor.  Despite our repeated attempts to get the kids to keep their room clean, it was always a mess.  Even when the floor was clean, it was still a mess thanks to a lot of clutter on the shelves.  Holly and I both hated it but figured that once Emma moved downstairs things would probably get better since things wouldn’t be so crowded.
