Last week it looked as though we were going to have to put Oscar to sleep. He was in a lot of obvious pain and not acting like himself. This typically wouldn’t be justification for having a beloved pet put down but it wasn’t the first time that this has happened. Holly took him to the vet and we discovered that he had tweaked his back really badly. The vet gave him a shot of what I can only imagine was liquid awesome and a few prescriptions: a pain killer and a muscle relaxer. Since then, Oscar has been doing much better and has returned to his old, lovable self. We were very grateful that our vet knew what to do to get him feeling well again.

Well, I was a little worried how Oscar would do with the chickens but he is really good with them. He really doesn’t care about them. Although we were outside the other day and Jeremiah thought he would have some fun and chase the chickens and that gave Oscar the idea that chasing the chickens is fun. He did chase the chickens and they went a-running with wings flapping. Jeremiah just stood there and laughed. I didn’t think he should egg Oscar on and when we told him to stop, Oscar quit chasing them and just wagged his tail. He was just having fun. Although I don’t think we are quite ready to leave Oscar alone with the chickens out of their coop. Who knows what he would do if he was bored.
Remember the old Tom & Jerry cartoon where Tom ran over the mother duck removing all of her feathers, thus exposing her underwear? Tom then got his comeuppance when the mother ducks boyfriend/husband/care taker ran over Tom’s back with the same mower. If you don’t remember this classic cartoon, here you go. (The stuff I’m talking about starts at about the 5:40 mark.)
Though it doesn’t show it in this episode, I know that footage exists of Tom getting run over by a mower and we actually get to see the results: a nice bald stripe right up the middle of his back. This is funny until it happens to your dog. A couple of days ago, something similar happened to our pet dog, Oscar.
You may remember a few weeks back when I posted about or dog, Oscar not liking our new bed because he can’t jump up on it. If you don’t remember, you can read it here. Well, there has been a new development in the new bed saga.
Yes, Oscar is still sleeping on the floor. He did figure out though that if he runs all the way down the hall and into the bedroom, he can usually jump on the bed. I think that it’s a bit too much work for him though. He’s come to the conclusion that it’s just easier to sleep on the floor. But that’s not the new development.
The new development has to do with Holly. After the first few nights on the new bed, she decided that having her extremities go numb while she sleeps is a bad thing. Apparently the springs in the mattress like to dig into her all over the place causing extreme pressure and discomfort. As a result, she doesn’t sleep well and requires a pillow in between the two of us.
For a while now, our mattress has desperately needed to be replaced. It didn’t only sag, it leaned to the side. Every morning when Holly and I woke up, we would barely be able to move because of back and/or neck pain. This had gone on for far too long so on Valentine’s Day, we bought a new bed.
Well, the bed was finally delivered on Monday. I like it a lot but it’s taking time getting used to sleeping on a mattress that doesn’t poke springs into my back and make me feel like a paraplegic in the mornings. Holly, on the other hand, seems to have a general disdain for the mattress. I think that she too just needs to get used to sleeping on a firm bed again.
As I have been going through some of our old posts, I realized that we haven’t given a really good update on the family lately. I have some time to kill while some software installs so here’s something keep you entertained.
Hannah: She’s doing really well… except for the fact that she has a bad cough and a runny nose for the last week. She’s getting better though. She constantly has a dirty face and I can’t figure out why. I wash it multiple times a day but there’s always something there… She’s also pretty much potty trained which is nice because I’m done with diapers forever. Or at least until I have to wear them.
With Holly in nursing school, there is a lot of stress in our home. As you might imagine, with three children, two dogs, a job, and school, plus a husband that works full-time and also goes to school, Holly was feeling a bit stressed.
Holly’s stress has been magnified with the start of clinicals last week. The fact that she’s doing clinicals isn’t what’s stressful, it’s the homework that associated with them that causes problems. She finishes her clinicals on Friday afternoon and then has approximately 48 hours to complete 40 hours worth of homework. That’s in addition to all of the other studying/homework that she has to do during the rest of the week. The cycle then starts over again on the following Thursday.
Over the past week, we’ve had sever thunderstorms blow through Syracuse every afternoon. They bring a lot of water, strong winds, lightning, thunder, and damage. The neighbor’s fence blew down the other day. They fixed it the next day only to have it blown down again that afternoon.
We’ve had our share of damage too. Unfortunately, most of it has been indoors. I’ve known for a long time that Savannah was a chicken disguised in a dog’s body. I didn’t know this about Oscar. Apparently when there’s thunder and lightning, my two dogs lose all control of the bodily functions. All week long, I’ve been cleaning up after my dogs. It’s rather disgusting.
With all of the excitement this weekend, I nearly forgot about our horrible Friday evening. It’s been a while since the dogs were groomed. They were starting to shed a lot and they were visibly uncomfortable with all of their fur. At night, Savannah was sleeping in the bathroom in front of the vent on the cold linoleum while Oscar has his head under the bed by that vent. They were hot, ratty, and gross. They needed a shave.
Yesterday Holly was surfing the internet and came across an add for a free male er spaniel. We figured that we’d check it out since he was free. We drove up to Willard and waited in the parking lot of the Flying J for about an hour before the dogs owner showed up. We then followed him home to check out the dog. When we got to the guy’s house, an excited ball of hair started running around the front yard. Apparently this was a er…
I took one look at this filthy ball of fluff called Oscar and decided that we were taking him home. Holly agreed. On the way back to Syracuse, the van smelled horrible. Oscar needed a bath. When we got home, he immediately went into the tub and Holly and I proceeded to clean him and trim his hair so that he looked somewhat like a dog. We had to refill the tub three times and he was still filthy!
