I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while but thanks to an extremely busy schedule full of 16 hour days, I’ve been putting it off. A few weeks ago though I made a purchase that has since renewed my desire to share my thoughts with you on some of the products that we see being sold on television. When people see an infomercial, a lot of times they think that the product being sold is too good to be true. Thankfully, we have this little thing called the internet where you can actually research a product and find out if it’s a steaming pile or if it’s actually worth spending money on.
One of the first things I bought after seeing it advertised in an infomercial was the Miracle Blade III knife set. These are the knives that will cut through a can, or better yet, a nail, and then easily slice a tomato. I purchased these a few years ago shortly before Thanksgiving. My purpose in getting them was so that I would have a good knife to carve the turkey with. I still use them to this day and they have never let me down. I have even tried cutting a nail and then a tomato and I can tell you that they performed fabulously. They’ll even carve fingers off of hands (just ask Holly). The Miracle Blade is the best kitchen knife I have ever owned and would recommend it to anybody.
Another purchase that I made from television is Back2Life. For those who haven’t seen the infomercial, it’s a machine that helps alleviate back pain. Ironically, I happened to see this as I was laid up in bed after throwing my back out. At that point, I had been suffering from back pain for years. It had become especially bad before it finally caused me to become bed-ridden for a few days. In the weeks before I spent the money on this machine, I had spent close to $300 on chiropractor bills. (I’m a big believer in chiropractic medicine if you have a good doctor. A good crack doc can make me feel awesome but a bad one is bad news…) I saw this infomercial and decided that I would be spending the money on doctor visits anyways so I gave it a try. It took a few weeks of daily use but since then, my back has felt great. If it starts to give me problems or if I start waking up with headaches, I’ll pull out the Back2Life and use it for about 24 minutes while I watch TV and then I feel great. I don’t think that this is something that will work for everyone, but it worked great for me. I’ve been very pleased with this purchase.
Remember Billy Mays? He’s the guy who sold a lot of cleaning products, most notably OxiClean. I’ve used that particular product and it’s great. I was able to remove a lot of marker from our sofa with it. My favorite product that he pitched though is Mighty Putty. The commercial for this shows the putty sealing a leaky pipe. A few weeks after seeing this, I discovered a leaky pipe in our utility room. Apparently I had put a nail through it a year or so ago and it was just now starting to drip. I figured that spending the money on this would be a lot easier than cutting the pipe out and replacing the section with the hole. I’m pleased to say that the pipe is no longer dripping. Granted, there wasn’t a lot of water coming out to begin with but knowing that I was able to seal the hole without having to replace everything was worth the $20 that I spent. Now I need to find something else that I can use this on…
My most recent “As seen on TV” purchase is the SlapChop. Every Thanksgiving I get tired of chopping mushrooms, celery, onion, etc. Sure, I have a Cuisinart food processor but it has a tendency of chopping things too fine. It’s great for some things, just not what I need it for as I prepare Thanksgiving dinner. Enter the SlapChop. I decided to give this baby a try about a week before Thanksgiving. Everything that I needed chopped got chopped in a fraction of the time it would have taken me to do by hand. I even used it this morning to make egg salad. I haven’t used it much but from what I can tell, it is awesome! Anyone who enjoys cooking should add one of these to their kitchen.
The lesson to be learned from this post is that “too good to be true” isn’t always the case. Also, it is possible to cut through a nail and then slice a tomato without changing knives when nobody is watching.
