Last Time This Season

family-fishingOver the weekend, we had our final camping trip of the season.  This time we went to Hades campground which is along the banks of the Duchesne River in the Uinta Mountains with my side of the family.  This is a location that we discovered last year.  It immediately became one of our favorite places to set up camp.  When I learned that some of my cousins had never been camping or fishing, I took it upon myself to remedy the situation and organized this family reunion of sorts.  Hades made perfect sense because not only is it beautiful, but the fishing is amazing.

There is a slow spot on the river where some beavers have built a dam.  This has created an almost pond-like fishing hole where the trout abound.  Unfortunately I wasn’t able to fish as much as I would have liked but that didn’t stop others from taking advantage of the river.  A few of my cousins  spent nearly every waking moment on the river and had amazing success.  On the other hand, I was only able to spend about three hours fishing and only caught one fish.  Neither Holly or the kids had any success.  It seemed that no matter what we tried fishing with, the fish just weren’t biting.  Nibbling yes, but not biting.

On Saturday afternoon, we all pulled out our assorted firearms and drove down the road a few miles to enjoy some target practice.  For this special occasion, I picked up a Red Rider BB gun so that the kids could feel included without the danger of having them accidentally shoot somebody.  Ironically, it was only fired one time… By me.  The girls decided to stay in the air conditioned van with Holly and Alex wanted to shoot something with more punch.  I thought that the .22 would satisfy his desire without knocking him on his butt.  Alex’s hands were too small to actually hold the gun so I held it and aimed while he pulled the trigger.  He was so proud of himself for getting to shoot one of my guns that he wanted to show the actual gun to everyone.  In addition to shooting, he also learned how to load a clip.  I had to hold the spring down for him but he put the bullets in three clips.  It was a lot of fun.

By the time we left on Sunday, we were all ready to get home.  After having spent six of the last twelve days camping, we were all camped out.  It’s a  good thing that the summer is almost over or else we might be tempted to try and squeeze one more trip in this season.  Not that it would be bad to spend another three days fishing in the mountains but I think that after four times this year, the family needs a break from sleeping on the ground.

For those who are interested in learning how to clean a fish, my Uncle Paul is trying to teach my Aunt Sheri how to do just that in this video.  Thanks should go to my Aunt Annette for the video.
