Daniel R. Zohner, loving husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Paul on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, of heart failure.
He was born July 10, 1923, in Cedron, to Jacob and Polly Christina Miller Zohner, the third son of 11 children. He graduated from Teton High School and then attended Utah State Agricultural College. Dan served in the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper in 11th Airborne in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return, he completed his bachelor’s degree at Utah State.
He married Fern Zollinger on Aug. 4, 1948, in the Logan LDS Temple and they were blessed with four children, Lynn Zohner (Emmy), Annette Warburton (Paul), Sheri Walters (Randy) and Kris Katoa (Amaile).
Two months after marrying Fern, Dan was asked to serve in the Texas-Louisiana Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning, he earned his teaching certificate and began a career teaching science, including 30 years at Minico High School and two years in Temple View, New Zealand. In 1955, his name was drawn for a farm on the northside, where he homesteaded in addition to teaching.
Some of his joys in life included flying, participating in the American Legion and also Scouting. He went through Wood Badge training and, in 1987, he and Fern received their Silver Beaver awards. He married Melba Jean McCann Johnson on Dec. 8, 1987, in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple, which gave him four stepchildren, Rick Johnson, Penny Bower (Barry), Kristy Rose (Scott) and Kyle Johnson (David). Combined they had 26 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Together, Dan and Melba served two missions, one to the South Island of New Zealand and the second to Austria. They also worked in the Boise Temple. Dan loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and served in many capacities in the LDS Church throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern; parents; three brothers, Mark, Archie and Lewis; one sister, Vonnie; a son-in-law, Amaile Katoa; and a grandson, Daniel Craig Warburton.
The funeral will be held at noon Friday, Dec. 19, at the Paul LDS Stake Center, 424 W. Ellis St., with Bishop Douglas D. Hartley officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans and Auxiliary. A graveside service and dedication of the grave will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Cedron Cemetery near Driggs. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St. in Burley, and from 11 until 11:45 a.m. Friday at the church.
We wish to extend a special thanks for the kind and tender loving care of Dr. Reed Harris, and to the nurses and aids of Intermountain Hospice.

Thank you for your kind words, Angie. Feel free to visit us often.
I stumbled upon your blog tonight as I was searching for images of Winger’s Asphalt Pie. Your Hannah is cute, but I won’t use her pic.
I also am from Teton Valley, though moved away in the mid ’80’s as a pre-teen. I returned in the early ’90’s as a high school grad coasting through life and ended up working at Mike’s Eats with Suzy, a waitress who’s maiden name was Zohner. Any connection? How wild would that be?!
