We’re Fuel Efficient

With gas at nearly $4.00 a gallon, Holly and I are looking for any way to save money that we can. We don’t do a lot of driving but I manage to go about 30 miles each day to and from work and Holly seems to be spending a lot on gas for the van. She doesn’t drive far but costs seem to be adding up due to the fact that it’s a van that doesn’t get great gas mileage.

We’ve been talking about it for a few years, but after running some numbers, factoring in current, and probable future gas prices, we finally decided that it was advantageous for us to purchase another vehicle. No, we didn’t get a hybrid and we still have both the van and the Colt. We bought a scooter.

Yeah, I know that me driving a scooter brings all sorts of comical images to mind. I also know that my manliness is seriously being called into question. And yes, I know that I will be the brunt of many of joke as other, more insecure, drivers see me on my scooter as they drive past me in some truck that gets 13 miles per gallon. But you know what? It’s all worth it because I get nearly 125 miles per gallon. While some knucklehead is laughing at me when I go to fill up, I can laugh right back because it costs me $4.65 to fill up while he’s spending $60-80.

I’ve been driving to work the past few days and it doesn’t take me any longer than it did before. The only bad part about it is that it’s been 60 degrees here. 60 degrees with a 50 MPH wind makes for a cold commute. This morning, it even snowed! (Man, I love global warming my butt off. Stupid hippies…) But with a leather coat, gloves, and my helmet, the weather isn’t terrible. It’s not great and I’d rather be someplace warm but I’m saving a ton of money on gas. I can deal with 30 minutes of discomfort.
