Last night was the annual fathers and sons campout for our ward. When I learned about it a week ago, I decided that it would be a good opportunity for me to spend some time with just Alex. I figured that he would enjoy camping with just me. It turns out that I was right. We had a great time.
Because I got off of work a few hours later than I had planned, we got a late start. Combine the late start with rush hour traffic through a construction zone and, by the time we got to Morgan, it was after 7:00. There was no way that I was going to set up camp and make dinner before it got dark so we stopped at Subway and got some sandwiches. As we sat at a table eating our dinner, Alex seemed pretty pleased with the fact that it was just the two of us. That is, until he got mad at me for forgetting to ask for pickles on his sandwich. Lucky for me though, he got over it pretty quickly. I think that it had something to do with the bar-b-que chips that I got for him.
When we finally arrived at Camp Woodland, I discovered that it was much more of a park than an actual camp. It’s basically a big open grassy area surrounded by trees with a river running along the back side. We looked and looked but didn’t see anybody that recognized. Finally, after walking through three of the “campgrounds”, we stumbled across a few people that we knew and decided to set up our tent.
When I pack for camping, I bring everything that I may need: a tent, a tarp, materials for starting a fire, a saw, a hatchet, cooking supplies, pretty much anything that a person would use for camping. In the end, we only used the tent, which Alex helped set up, and sleeping bags. I guess it’s good that I didn’t have to set up a “real” camp since it was nearly dark by the time we got the tent up.
After we were all set up for the night, we went and hung out by the fire. We ate marshmallows, deftly avoiding the million and a half kids with flaming sticks that were playing in the fire, and the bishop said a few nice words about how important it is to spend time with our kids. Good thing that I was there with Alex because if I was alone, I’d probably have felt guilty.
At about 9:30, Alex had had enough and aksed if we could go to bed. I got him all tucked in and then the talking started. Apparently he was afraid of sleeping in the tent and didn’t want to actually sleep. However, after a few minutes, he was sound asleep and didn’t wake up until about 8:00 this morning.
After eating breakfast this morning, we packed up camp and headed home. We both had a lot of fun and look forward to going again next year. The best part is that we get to do it all over again in a week. This time though, we’ll take the girls with us.
