The Basement: Three Months In
My original goal was to have our basement completely finished by the end of March. I looked at the calendar and discovered that today is the end of March. Considering the fact that I have yet to start hanging drywall, I don’t think that I’m going to meet my goal.
When people set goals, then horribly fail to meet them, they will usually set a new, more realistic goal. I think that I’m going to be a bit different here. Yeah, I could push the “wannabefinished” date back to the end of April, but we’re going out of town this weekend and the week after that, my mom is coming into town. That means that I realistically won’t be able to spend an entire Saturday working on it for three weeks. If a goal can’t be accomplished within a week, then it isn’t worth setting. Just kidding. I hope to be done with everything by the end of May.
Despite the fact that I won’t be able to start hanging it, Holly and I went to The Home Depot on Saturday night and bought 63 sheets of drywall and drywall related supplies. (I also picked up a much needed new lawnmower and miter saw.) It was an exhausting experience.
I did some research and found that one sheet of drywall weighs close to 70 pounds. We had somebody take the drywall out to our trailer using a forklift but I helped load the trailer. Holly and I then had to unload it at the house. By the time we were finished, both of us could barely move our arms. Our garage is now even more full of construction materials than it was before, but when the basement is finished, it will have been worth it.
I really want to get everything finished up because there are other things that are starting to demand my attention. Our lawn is coming in really nicely causing it to demand a good mowing and I want to build a 8′ X 10′ shed in the backyard. I think that I need to get a lot of friends together to hang out then trick them into helping me hang the drywall. Then maybe I can get them to do some yard work…
