Well, CBS has gone and done it again. They canceled Jericho. The show that made history by being brought back from cancellation, only to be given a crappy time slot and an even crappier lead-in just couldn’t produce the numbers that CBS found acceptable to justify a third season.
I have to admit that I’m not really surprised. The writing was on the wall even before the first episode of the second season aired. CBS was basically doing this to get fans to stop sending tons and tons of nuts to their mailroom. They knew that we were angry about the show ending on a cliffhanger so they decided to placate us with seven more episodes to tie everything up all nice and pretty like. I have to say though that those seven episodes were amazing. They were quite literally some of the best television that I have ever seen. (That’s saying a lot.)
I honestly don’t think that the executives at CBS wanted to see Jericho succeed. If they did, they wouldn’t have stuck it in the 10:00 time slot, right after Big Brother 23: The Search For Relevancy. They also wouldn’t use the Nielsen numbers to justify the cancellation. If you look at the DVR, iTunes, and internet numbers, Jericho obviously has a very strong fan base. None of those fans have Nielsen boxes in their homes though. How does it feel to know that no matter what you watch, your favorite shows will be canceled because you don’t matter unless you have a box on your TV? I think it sucks.
Am I mad that Jericho was once again cast aside? Yeah, I am. But I think that one of my favorite shows of all-time being canceled the second time around isn’t quite as painful as it was the first. At least this time, CBS didn’t hit the fans from behind in a sneak attack. We saw them coming, yet we still believed them when they said that they had no intention to kick us in the groin. Seeing the kick coming doesn’t make it hurt less but… Awww, who am I kidding? It still hurts.
CBS sucks all kind of suck right now.
