Today while I was making the kids lunch, I discovered that there was red and green coloring all over the wall. And I mean all over. It started in the kitchen, went down the hall, and covered the walls in both of the kids bedrooms. Coincidentally, both Alex and Hannah were running around with red and green colored pencils in their hands. Figuring out how the marks got on the walls was not going to be a tough mystery to solve.
I asked Alex, who was holding a red pencil, who did the marks on the wall. He immediately threw Hannah under the bus and blamed her. His three-year-old brain isn’t advanced enough to get rid of the incriminating evidence he was holding in his hand so he ended up getting busted and spending extra time in the corner for lying.
Hannah wasn’t too hard to catch either. She was running down the hall with a green pencil and I actually saw her write on the wall in the kitchen. I started getting after her and she ran to Chelsea and Holly for protection. She was sent to a different corner but chose to hang out in the living room instead so she spent and extended period of time in her bedroom.
After lunch, the fun began. I gave both kids a bucket of warm, soapy water and some rags and had them wash all of the walls. It was pretty funny to see both of the kids scrubbing the walls as hard as they could in a vain attempt to remove the colored pencil marks. So that they felt like they were actually accomplishing something, I followed them with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and removed all of the coloring.
In the end, the kids actually enjoyed their punishment. Alex took great pride in cleaning the marks off of the walls and Hannah was happy to help. What was designed to be a horrible punishment turned into a fun activity. Maybe I should have just left them in their corners…
