The Hole In The Basement

Last night, my friend John and I were doing some more framing in the basement when a 90 lb. jackhammer arrived. The arrival of such a fun tool meant that it was time to stop framing and start breaking concrete around the shower drain.

When we bought the house, one of the things that we were told by the previous owner was that we wouldn’t have to move the drains when we finished the basement. LIES! The drain for the shower was in a totally random spot. It wouldn’t fit a tub or any standard size shower. I guess it was in the perfect spot for somebody who wanted to tile their own shower in but that’s a lot of work that I don’t care to do. This randomness ultimately meant that the drain would have to be relocated. Enter the jackhammer.
We ended up having to move the drain about 18 inches closer to the wall and about 4 inches back. It was buried beneath 4 inches of concrete and about 8 inches of dirt. It took almost two hours to break up the concrete and move enough of the dirt out of the way so that we could find a good spot to cut the pipe. We finally got everything put back together, including replacing the dirt and pouring new concrete. It was a big job but relatively easy with the jackhammer. If we didn’t have it, I’d still be working on breaking the concrete.
