Nature’s Revenge

If you haven’t heard, California is currently on fire… Again. Right now, all of the millionaires in Malibu are being evacuated from their homes so that they don’t toast up like the soy marshmallows in their cupboards.

Am I the only person who is curious as to what goes through the minds of the people who build their home in the hills of Malibu? These are the people who build multi-million dollar homes 3.2 inches from the edge of a cliff then act surprised when it slides into the ocean. These are also the people who tell us that Mother Earth is angry with us for mistreating her with our SUVs and controlled burns designed to prevent wild fires. I have a question. If Mother Earth is so angry with the SUV drivers, then why does she constantly give people in Southern California, and their hybrid car driving, non-meat eating ways, a beating in the form of nearly every natural disaster imaginable?

Weren’t California’s fires in the news last year? And the year before that? And the year before that? And every year since the advent of sensationalist news programming? Either the news agencies are running with old stories and footage or these people aren’t learning their lesson. Don’t get me wrong, I feel bad for those who are losing everything. In fact, I feel really bad for some of them. Don’t you think that they would get a clue though? They go through this every single year. I can understand not getting it after their homes burned the first half dozen times but it’s starting to become ridiculous. They’re like the people in the Shady Acres trailer park in Middle of Nowhere, Oklahoma that lose their trailer every six months due to a tornado but feel that it’s a good idea to rebuild in the exact same location. If it was me, I’d be for moving to a location that has a less flammable, more prone to not fall into the ocean foundation.

I have two theories as to why people keep rebuilding in areas that get destroyed annually. The first is that they’re ignorant. I don’t know what kind of education other people have. Maybe they didn’t learn that wood homes burn and when the earth shakes really hard, stuff falls down. My other theory is that they are arrogant. They think that since lightning allegedly can’t strike the same place twice, why should a hurricane or wildfire be able to.

I think that we need to have a fund raiser for these people. Maybe we could do a fun run. We can call it the “Celebrity Malibu Mansion Memorial Pro-Am Race for the Cure for Stupidity and Arrogance.” Or, as has been suggested with New Orleans, we can tell people that the location of where they want to live is classified as unsafe due to mudslides, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, fires, or rabid chipmunks. Come to think of it, that makes more sense.

I know that a lot of people like Malibu because it has awesome views of the ocean. If that view of the ocean rapidly approaches my back door though, I’m moving. I don’t want to live in the Midwest because of the high possibility of tornadoes. I also don’t want to live in the South because of hurricanes. I understand that I give certain things up by my “closed mindedness” but I’m OK with that. I’d rather be considered closed minded than to have a tractor dropped on me from 200 feet in the air. Maybe if I had millions of dollars at my disposal though, my attitude would be different.
