Fall Is In The Air
I love autumn. The nights are getting cooler and the leaves are changing colors. Plus, I don’t have to mow my lawn every week in sweltering heat or shovel snow so it’s a good time of year for me.
Down the road from our house lies Black Island Farms. This is a huge, 400+ acre farm that turns into Utah’s largest corn maze once October rolls around. In addition to the maze(s), they also have tractor rides through the farm, stopping at the pumpkin patch where everybody gets to pick the largest pumpkin they can find. Once the sun goes down, the Field of Screams begins. There’s also numerous activities for smaller kids including slides and a bounce house.
Last night we took the kids to the farm. We headed to the corn maze to start the fun. Chelsea had a map which was cheating but she managed to get us through without getting anybody lost. I tried to mislead everyone but they all listened to Chelsea instead. I guess the next time I need people to listen to me, I should grab a random map and start sounding all authoritative. It worked for her. Once it got dark, I was hoping to do one of the other mazes but nobody would go with me. (It wouldn’t have been fun to get lost all by myself.) I was thinking that with a lack of light, a map would be useless. Without a map, it would actually be a challenge.
The tractor ride is always fun. The driver of the tractor told us all sorts of facts about the farm. Apparently there is a lot wildlife that calls the place home, including a herd of deer and numerous birds of prey. There’s also a lot of raccoons and skunks. I learned that 89% of the raccoons in Davis county have rabies. (If I ever get bit by a rabid raccoon, please show your support for me by wearing a “Support the Rabid” bracelet.) We got off of the tractor with six huge pumpkins that will have scary designs carved into them as Halloween gets closer. It was very fun.
If you’re ever in Syracuse during October, I highly recommend stopping by Black Island Farms. Admission is not free but it is worth the money that you spend. I would suggest planning on spending a few hours just so that you can take part in all of the activities. Oh, and while you’re there, be sure to get some kettle corn. It’s very delicious.

It takes more than an authoritative sounding voice to be able to lead a group through the wildness of the corn maze. It takes many many years of specialized training. (Which includes cat training
Not to mention ignoring the sounds of those who may try to lead you astray

I want one!)

It was good to see you guys that night at Black Island Farms. Did you guys want to join us for Fat Cats in November?
I’m not sure if we’ll make it or not. Holly quit her job so it’s a possibility but we’ll have to see how her homework situation is.
