Final Job Hunt Update… For Now

A couple of weeks ago, Holly found an ad in the classifieds for an IT support position at Harmon’s. She showed it to me and since I felt that I was qualified, I sent them my resume. Within a day, they called me to schedule an interview. I wasn’t too excited because I’ve been getting a lot of calls regarding my resume but they all seem to be for positions that pay much less than I currently make. I figured with the interview being with a grocery store chain, it would probably be another low-paid position but since I haven’t been on an interview for a while, I decided to go to get some practice interviewing.

The interview went pretty much as I had expected. I was interviewed by the head of IT and the person who is the manager over the position that I was there for. I felt like I was doing really well until they asked me a technical question that I didn’t know the answer to. I was honest and told them that I would have to research it. I knew that if I tried to bluff an answer, I’d get busted and would have no hope of getting the job. The manager then reworded the question, explaining what he meant. Once he used terms that I was familiar with, I was able to answer the question somewhat effectively even though at that point I don’t think they expected one.

Other than the one question, I felt that I did fairly well during the interview. I asked them how soon they were looking to fill the position and was told that it would be about a week before they were done with the first round of interviews. After that, the three or four best candidates would be called back for a second round. Once those were completed, it would be another week or so before a final decision was made. I figured that I’d be one of the few called back for another interview but I wasn’t really confident of my chances of actually getting the job.

Yesterday as I was leaving work, I received a call from Harmon’s asking if I was still interested in the position. I responded that I was. I was then asked questions regarding my requirements, i.e. salary, vacation, insurance, etc. I thought that this phone call was just to schedule a second round interview. Those are some weird questions to ask in an interview. It was almost as though they were making me an offer.

Lo and behold, an offer was made. I accepted it. Now I have a nervous stomach but not because I don’t think it’s a good idea to go work at Harmon’s; it’s because I have a good job that I’m good at and leaving will be hard for me to do. I’ve made a lot of friends at Unisys but I know that moving on is the right thing to do.

My last day at Unisys will be August 31st. I told my team lead today and will tell my supervisor on Monday. They’re sad to see me go but also excited for my new opportunity. I have some vacation and a few paid holidays that need used up in the next two weeks. I better get busy planning some fun.
