We have a 1994 Dodge Colt that was given to us by Holly’s sister. (Technically I paid around $1.32 but for all intents and purposes, the car was given to us.) It’s been a really good car for us.
In the 5 years that we’ve had it, we’ve had to replace all of the tires but that was due to normal wear. Last year, the transmission went out so we replaced that. While we were had the transmission out, we replaced the clutch too so it won’t have to be done later. Lucky for us, we’re friends with a really good mechanic and he practically gives us the labor for free. The transmission and clutch were only $600. If we took it someplace else, we would have spent over $1,500!

A few weeks ago, Holly went to the garage and hopped in the car to go to work. The car didn’t start. I checked it and couldn’t figure out what the problem was so I called our friend. He looked at it and figured that it was the distributor but told me to replace the distributor cap and rotor just in case. He said that a rebuilt distributor would be over $300 and he wanted us to save money if at all possible. I replaced the parts that he suggested but in the end, he was right; it was the distributor.
I called a few places and, after some negotiating, managed to find a distributor for $100. Holly and I were debating whether or not we should buy a new car but I figured that it was worth $100 to avoid having two car payments. I’m glad that I got it because the car now works. We ended up spending $160, including labor, to have a tune-up and to have a $350 part replaced. I’m pretty happy. 
Like I said, it’s good to know guys like this.
