What Geeks Argue About

Yesterday at work somebody discovered that one of our coworkers has his computer configured to open files and applications in Windows with only a single click of the mouse. This led to much mocking of the single click option and its inefficiency. A poll was even sent out by one of those involved in the discussion to see what people prefer. The single-click was soundly defeated and he who uses it was shamed.

I thought I’d bring this discussion here for a few reasons. The first is to show you what geeks argue about. We weren’t discussing who the better singer is or who’s better looking. We were arguing about the most effective way to open a generic file on a computer! How sad. Yes, I agree that we need to get lives.

The next reason that I bring this up is so that I can get your input. I’m curious as to how people do this now. I used to think that everyone double-clicks because that is the best. (I’m no single-clicker.) I was proven wrong so now I want non-scientific statistics that I can bend to suit my needs. I have a feeling that they will confirm what I’m thinking.

Now you vote.

What is the best way you to open a folder or application?

I vote single click to spite you. But logically thinking- wouldn’t a single click be more time effective?

  2. Jeremiah says:

Yes, it would be more effective… in theory. But for all those who have spent years with a double-click, we’ll still double-click to open things. This will then open two instances of the folder/application causing wasted time spent closing it back up.

  3. Chelsea says:

Well then you should just train yourself to single click. Mind over finger! Seriously, have some control.

… ray is just weird ;)

  5. Richard says:

I hate programs that open with a single click. I always end up opening two instances of the program.

  6. Jeremiah says:

I agree, Richard. That is why the double-click is superior. :d
