Live Earth Concerts + Me = GRRRRRR!

I’m so sick of all the crap that the media spews about global warming being caused by humans, specifically the U.S. I have posted my thoughts on this issue previously so I won’t get too much into my reasoning for thinking it’s all a bunch of hype. I do however want to point out a few things about the Live Earth concerts that took place over the weekend since I’m feeling like exposing some hypocrites today.

I have a lot of issues with the whole global warming culture. It’s main belief is that we as humans are the cause of global warming. Despite the fact that science is still out on this, we are led to believe that there is a consensus in the scientific community that humans are ruining the Earth. I don’t necessarily disagree with that but I take exception to comments that we are the sole cause that the world is heating up. What about farting cows?

For those who are unaware of what the Live Earth concert series is, it’s basically a bunch of concerts that took place over the weekend on multiple continents. The concerts were headlined by such acts as Madonna, Genesis, and Dave Matthews Band.

The whole point of this concert series is to raise awareness about global warming. First, I thought that Al Gore’s propaganda film, An Inconvenient Truth, was there to raise awareness about global warming. So apparently the first objective of Live Earth is moot. Awareness has already been raised and stuffed down our collective throats. Second, say that awareness actually was raised by the concerts. Now what? Awareness has been raised about a lot of things. Me telling you that I have a long toenail on my right foot makes you aware. Do you care? I’m guessing not. What happens after people are aware about global warming? Are we expected to radically change our lives? Yes. Will we? Probably not. But we’re aware. Do we care? I don’t.

The thing that really bothers me is that people like Madonna will take the stage, making a fortune in the process, and lecture people that they need to be recycling more and driving less while she herself produces more than 100 times the average amount of waste produced by a normal person in a year. The only thing that’s larger than the quantity of her waste is her ego. And the same can be said for the majority of those who performed over the weekend. I read that the performers would fly 222,623 miles between them to get to the concerts. I’m guessing that none of them flew coach.

My favorite headline from the weekend indicated that the concert in Johannesburg, South Africa had very bad turnout due to cold weather. Doesn’t it defeat the purpose of having a concert to raise awareness that the world is getting hotter when it snows for the first time in 25 years at the concert? Maybe it’s just me…

Also, lots of headlines are saying that nobody really cared that this thing was going on; the ratings weren’t as high as expected. I’m guessing that part of this is because the pot doesn’t like the kettle to call it black. I know that I don’t want to listen to some celebrity tell me that they are doing their part to save the earth by brushing their teeth in the shower instead of at the sink or that they drive a hybrid instead of an SUV. So what? Private jets and large houses use a lot of energy and thus cause pollution.

Thanks to this wonderful “Save the Earth” campaign started by Al Gore and his ilk, we’re actually worse off now than at this time last week. John Buckley of Carbon Footprint, an organization that helps companies reduce their carbon dioxide emissions said “We would have to plant 100,000 trees to offset the effect of Live Earth.” He goes on to say that it’s OK though because we’re now aware. Aware of what? That we need to plant 100,000 trees to offset some big egos? Thanks for that.

This whole event was best summarized by Michelle Griffin, the editor of M., when she said “It’s worse than pointless.” She also said “What if all those rock groups donated serious cash to a fund that subsidized alternative energy sources?”

What if? I’m guessing that the lack of publicity that comes from writing a check as opposed to having millions of people watch you on TV and in person would cause these people’s egos to deflate so rapidly that global warming would be the least of our concerns. A giant void would appear causing everything to disappear. Life would cease to exist and we would all become nothing. Good thing we’re aware.
