Tonight at 6:00 the much anticipated iPhone will be released at AT&T/Cingular and Apple stores. Already, people have been camping out for days in hopes of being one of the first people in their neighborhood to have this so-called “must have” gadget. The media has barraged us with their incessant chatter about how we all must run out and purchase one. You know, I really couldn’t care less.
For those who know me, my feelings toward Apple, and especially the iPod, are well known. For those who don’t, I have a strong dislike for all thing Apple, especially one button mice and iPods. It’s not that I think that they are poorly made. I just think that Apple products in general are too overpriced and I’m a Windows guy. If I can’t plug a MP3 player into my computer and have it work without installing additional software (read iTunes), I don’t want it.
The iPhone combines a web browser, digital media player, and phone into one device. I can’t believe that Apple is going to be able to get $500+ from people for a phone that plays music and can surf the internet. My phone does that now. What’s the big deal? Granted, the iPhone has a slick interface and would probably be an improvement over some of the phones out there, but is it worth the money? Not to me it’s not.
For those of you who are chomping at the bit to have the first iPhone on your block, good luck with that. For those like me that despise all things Apple and will never ever buy an iPhone, iPod, iOneButtonMouse, etc., stay strong. Don’t let the media convince you that you need an iPhone.
