Today was an interesting day. I got up like normal and headed off to work in the wee hours of the morning. Due to the fact that I broke my hand in a fit of frustration yesterday, I was having a tough time typing and using a mouse. There was lots of pain so I left early and came home.
When I arrived home, Holly said that she and the kids were planning on going to the nearby bird refuge and asked if I wanted to come along. Since I love going bird watching, I was in. I grabbed my camera, binoculars, and bird book and we all piled into the van.
When we got there, we had gone down the trail a bit and Holly realized that Alex needed to use the restroom. Before we got too far away from it, she thought it would be best if she took him back while I waited with the girls. While we were waiting, Emma noticed a kestrel falcon on top of the “building” we were in. I pulled out my binoculars and realized that it had what appeared to be a dead muskrat in its talons. Emma and I enjoyed looking at it until it flew away to eat.
Once Holly and Alex returned, we headed out on the trail that loops around the refuge. It’s about a mile long so the kids rode in the wagon part of the way and we stopped to enjoy the scenery quite frequently. There were a lot of birds but they were mostly hidden in the tall grasses and reeds. We could hear them though and the ones that we saw were beautiful. Towards the end of the trail, we noticed some bits and pieces of what appears to be the muskrat that we saw earlier. I think that I enjoyed seeing that more than the kids did but we all really enjoyed our little nature walk.
I took a lot of pictures (none of the muskrat remains) that I’ll try to post tomorrow.
