Global Warming: Fact or Crap?

How’s that for an opening volley? I feel like being controversial today so here’s my thoughts on global warming.

Let me start by saying that I like the outdoors. I enjoy camping and fishing and riding my bike. I dislike being able to see the air that I breathe and don’t particularly enjoy drinking dirty water.

In my Tree Hugging 101 class, we recently watched Al Gore’s award winning film on global warming called An Inconvenient Truth. I strongly disagree with Mr. Gore’s politics but I still sat in the class doing my best to have an open mind. While I agree with certain points that he illustrates, like that the Earth’s climate is changing, I think that there is also a lot of pseudo-science and just plain crap in the movie.

Allow me to explain myself. If we look at history, the environment would appear to change in cycles. Al Gore would have you believe differently, but he shows a series of temperature increases followed by decreases early in the film. To me, if something goes up, then down, then up and down again, it’s a cycle. There have been many ice ages; at least two of which had a retarded sloth running around with a mammoth and a saber-tooth tiger. Dennis Avery of the Hudson Institute states that vineyards in Europe were able to grow grapes at the beginning of the last millennium only to see temperatures grow too cold until the mid-1900’s. It was warm, then it got cold, then it got warm again. Looks like a cycle to me.

Another complaint that I have with the global warming “crisis” is that scientists can’t seem to agree. The media would have you believe that it’s a consensus but there are a lot of respectable people out there who just can’t seem to jump on the band-wagon. Some of the same scientists that would have you believe that we’re all going to melt by the end of the summer were preaching that we’d all be popsicles back in 1975. It’s all bogus science.

Claude Allegre, one of France’s most celebrated scientists, was among the first to sound the alarm about the dangers of global warming. Now that there is a wealth of data on the subject, Dr. Allegre has changed his views. To his surprise, the many climate studies failed dismally in establishing a man-made cause of catastrophic global warming. (Read more here.) But he’s not the only one. Nigel Calder, a former editor of New Scientist stated “I talk to scientists and come up with one story, and Al Gore talks to another set of scientists and comes up with a different story.” There’s also other examples here, here, and here. Even the New York Times is getting after Al Gore to calm down the hype.

Some of my favorite stories that have been in the news this past winter have to deal with record snowfalls in Chicago, New York, and Alaska and record cold in California and elsewhere in the U.S. However, one of my personal favorites, hornets invading France, shows two things: it’s getting warmer and it’s not just humans that like to take over France.

My biggest complaint about global warming is that if it’s such a serious issue, why don’t people like Al Gore and British PM, Tony Blair change their lives? Obviously it’s not something that they think is going to destroy us or else they’d stop flying on private jets and spending more than most people make in a year on gas and electricity.

I personally could care less what some activist does but I have no respect for Al Gore because I see him as a hypocrite. However, I have huge respect for Ed Begley, Jr. who, as a big-time lover of the environment, rides his bike to Hollywood events. It’s good to practice what you preach.

Wow. I’ve written a lot. If you think I’m wrong, tell me. Don’t just say that I’m a fool though. Convince me with valid arguments. I’m gonna shut it now and go play an environmentally friendly video game on my Energy Star PC.

How dare you contradict our reincarnate saviour Al Gore (he shares the title with Michael Moore). I don’t have any valid arguments to convince you you’re wrong, but I have a feeling, the only reason you watched “An Inconvient Truth” was to find something to disagree with. You’re such a republican! Gag!
